Metal or Wood Caskets
\There are many choices to make when planning a loved one’s funeral. The type of casket your loved one is laid to rest in is just one of those many choices. This article will explore some of the material options for caskets and which may be right for your family member.
Metal or Wood Casket?
Generally, casket options fall under two material categories: metal or wood. There are plenty of options within these two categories, depending on the type of metal or wood used. Metal caskets can come in a wide assortment of colors and are meant to be sleek and durable. Wooden caskets can come in an assortment of wood types and finishes. They are also each unique because of the wood grain.
Steel Caskets
Steel caskets can come in a variety of thicknesses (gauges) for more durability and heft. They are often available in an assortment of colors. The most common of which include silver, blue, white, and black. Gasketed steel coffins help seal the interior of the casket from the elements.
Copper & Bronze
Bronze or copper caskets are usually considered premium options. They are heavier than most steel caskets and are more durable. These models may also come with gasket options. Copper and bronze caskets often have plush velvet or crepe linings.
Hardwood Caskets
Solid and beautiful, hardwood caskets are often chosen for their unique look and expert craftsmanship. These caskets are most often crafted from mahogany, cherry, walnut, oak, or maple woods. While hardwood caskets can come in any color, most use finishes or stains that highlight the natural color of the wood and showcase their unique grain structure.
Softwood Caskets
Softwood caskets are often crafted from pine, poplar, or cedar. Softwoods are more affordable than most hardwood or metal models. They offer a more rustic appearance compared to many other casket styles.
Veneer Caskets
Veneer caskets are made from composite woods with a tin veneer finish. Veneer caskets are the most cost-effective among all types. They are usually made to look similar to natural woods.
