Obituary of Anthony Pizzo

Anthony Pizzo passed away on January 24, 2025.  Tony, as he was affectionately referred to by his family and friends, was born on November 13, 1935 to Sicilian immigrants, Giuseppe and Ninfa Pizzo.  He was raised in Manhattan with his three older sisters, Anita, Grace, and Mary and his younger brother Joseph.

He grew up working in the family grocery store on Stanton Street on the Lower East Side.  As a child, he was a Brooklyn Dodgers fan and his doting sisters would often take him and his younger brother to games at Ebbitts Field.  He went on to become an NYPD police officer from 1957 to 1977 working mostly at the 1st and 9th precinct as well as in Upper Manhattan as a plainclothes officer.

In 1966, he married the love of his life, Marie (nee Paolucci) and settled in Manhattan. In 1969 they would move to Staten Island to raise their children, Joseph, Samantha, and Anthony.

After his retirement from the NYPD, he moved on to a second 20-year career, this one with Morgan Guaranty. In his spare time he enjoyed coaching little league, hunting and day trading.

Three years ago, Tony and Marie moved to Four Seasons at Lakewood in New Jersey.  They embraced the lifestyle of their new community, becoming active participants in many clubs and activities.  One of his favorite clubs was the garden club where he was lovingly nicknamed, “Tony Tomatoes” by his fellow club members.  He enjoyed sharing his secret “magical dirt” (who some say came from Staten Island), and his acid free purple tomatoes that he would generously share with everyone.

Tony was a loving husband to Marie, who passed away just 6 weeks ago. Carrying on his legacy are his devoted children, Joseph, Samantha Mauro (Frank), and Anthony (Michele) and his adored grand children, Jake, Nicholas, Frankie, Justin, Gianna and AJ.  He is also survived by his caring brother Joseph (Margie), and sister-in-law Joyce (Joey) as well as his many dedicated nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral from the Matthew Funeral Home, Inc., 2508 Victory Boulevard, on Thursday, 1/30, departing at 9:15 AM.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church at 10:00 AM.  Interment will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery.  Family and friends may visit on Wednesday, 1/29, from 3:00 to 7:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation in Tony’s memory to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Blvd. Staten Island, NY 10306.
