Obituary of Nancy Krupa

Nancy Krupa (nee Pagan), 97, of Bulls Head Staten Island, NY, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at home on February 2, 2025.  Nancy was born in Hatillo, Puerto Rico on May 9, 1927.  She served as the pioneer for her family.  She moved to Sunset Park, Brooklyn by herself and subsequently brought her entire family from Puerto Rico to Park Slope, Brooklyn, in the 1950s. Nancy began her career as a seamstress in Brooklyn NY.  She was the lead forelady for a number of textile factories in Bush Terminal, Brooklyn.  She went on to become a true entrepreneur. She purchased her first home in Park Slope as a single woman in the 1950s.  She opened a grocery store with a butcher shop in Sunset Park and purchased a multi-family home in Borough Park, Brooklyn.  Nancy moved with her husband John and five children to Staten Island, NY in 1971.  She opened a wholesale clothing company during her early years in Staten Island, whilst raising her family.  At the age of 50, Nancy decided to go back to school to become a licensed hairdresser and cosmetologist.  She graduated from Wilfred Beauty Academy in the 1970’s.  She went on to acquire her hair salons inclusive of the ownership of the commercial properties in Tottenville, Staten Island.  She was the sole proprietor of Mane Street Unisex (245 Main Street), as well as Mane Street Barber Shop (238 Main Street).  She took great pride in her work, and she was the beloved hairdresser of choice to police officers, fire fighters, NYC municipal employees, clergy, celebrities, models, musicians and to many others in the Tottenville community, all of whom she often referred to as her extended family.  She was fondly referred to by many as the Mayor and Queen of Main Street and her neighbors on Plank Road referred to her as “the real Queen of Plank Road.”

Nancy had many passions. Her first passion was her family and her faith. She took great joy in being of service to her family and her faith in the Lord.  She took an active role in her grandchildren’s lives, attending plays, recitals, sporting events as a devout NY Yankees fan, sharing stories of her childhood, cooking with them and offering advice. Secondly, her passion for her profession and gardening were immeasurable.  She served her profession well into her 80’s.  Her gardens and plants were exquisite.  At one point in time, she had more than 100 plants.  In her retirement she took great pleasure tending to her garden and visiting with her family. She loved her time at the beach and boating with her children and grandchildren. She cherished her trips to visit her children and respective families in Manhattan, Kentucky, New Jersey, Delaware and Staten Island.

Nancy was an extremely intelligent, passionate, and loving woman.  She was often the “go to” resource for many family members and friends that needed assistance and guidance.  She served as a second mother to many.  She was a devoted wife to her late husband, supporting him in all his educational and professional pursuits and endeavors.

Nancy is preceded in death by her husband, John P. Krupa, her mother Rosa Pagan Ruiz (nee Quiles), father Vincente Pagan, Stepfather Hipolito “Polo” Ruiz and her sisters Ana Rivera, Grace N. Domenech, and Eda R. McNally.  She is survived by her sons and daughters; John Vincent Krupa and his three children John Anthony, Taylor Ann, Matthew Acates, and great granddaughter Scarlett, Suzanne Patricia Krupa and her partner Joann M. Glussich and fur baby Lily, Michelle Rose Krupa and her three children Ryan, CJ and Steven, Kenneth Anthony Krupa and his wife Yvette Lima Krupa and their children Derick (Jessica), Owen, and Madeleine, Nannette Maria Krupa and her husband Mark A. Cremona and their children Nikkolas Zellers, NancyAna, and Gabriel, and her sister Bonnie Mandracchia (husband Tony) and her family, her brother Luis Pagan (late wife Maria Teresa) and his family. She will be deeply missed by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family.
