Obituary of Boris Cernosia
Boris Cernosia, 90 of Staten Island, passed away on Saturday, May 17, 2025. He is survived by his wife Lenka, two sons, Dennis and Boris, and a daughter-in-law Michele.
Boris was born on the island of Ugljan in Croatia to Nikoleta and Vice Crnosija. He served as a helmsman on a surplus World War II PT boat for the Croatian Navy. He emigrated to the United States in his twenties and build a life around hard work, learning, and family. He met his wife Lenka a few years later and raised two sons in their home on Staten Island. He always said his proudest moment was seeing his two sons' graduate college.
He took great joy in learning and building, becoming the family's self-taught carpenter, plumber, and mechanic. In his spare time, he watched old movies and documentaries; and enjoying nurturing his fig trees and grapevines.
In his retirement, he would take yearly trips back home to Croatia to spend time with family and friends where his birthday party became an annual event for the village.
Family and friends may visit the Matthew Funeral Home, 2508 Victory Blvd., Staten Island, NY on Friday, May 23rd from 2-4 and 7-9 PM. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, May 24th at 10 AM. Entombment to follow at Moravian Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The ALS Association (www.ALS.org) in memory of Boris.
