Obituary of Robert J. Dougherty

OBITUARY – ROBERT J. DOUGHERTY March 22, 1947 – May 27, 2025 Robert J. Dougherty, a devout family man, proud veteran and retired NYPD officer, passed away peacefully at his home in the Westerleigh section of Staten Island on May 27th, 2025. He was 78 years old. Born and raised in New Brighton, Robert dedicated his life to service, family and community. He proudly served in the US Army, after being drafted and was a Vietnam War Veteran. Years after his military service, he joined the NY Police Department in 1973 where he served with distinction for 20 years. Robert was a long-standing member and past Commander of the North Shore VFW Post 7172 and for numerous years, served as Bar Chairman and was affectionally known as "Doc". His devotion to country was matched only by his faith – he was a devout Catholic; had a strong devotion to the Blessed Mother and was an active parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Church. Robert was known for sharing Holy Water from Lourdes with anyone in need, offering comfort and blessings to others in times of hardship. Robert was married 49 years to the love of his life, Ann Marie Dougherty (Mullins) and together they built a life centered on love, laughter and family. He was a cherished father of Christopher Dougherty and Mary Dougherty, Mary's fiancée, Joseph Volpone and the adored Pop-Pop of Mckenzie Dougherty, who brought him endless joy. Robert is also survived by his beloved sister, Maureen Lippert (Dougherty); brother-in-law, Robert; in-laws, Paul Mullins, Patricia Mullins, Marilyn Mullins-Schutz and Kathleen Mullins, as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends, who held a special place in his heart. Robert is pre-deceased by his parents, William Dougherty and Helen Dougherty (Barowski). Robert had a zest for life and loved to entertain. His home was always open and hosted many festive parties, including St. Patrick's Day, Tree-Lighting and various other parties throughout the years. Robert's infectious smile, warm spirit and generous heart made everyone feel like family. Above all, Robert's greatest happiness came from spending time with his loved ones, especially his treasured granddaughter, Mckenzie. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Robert's name to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, honoring his life-long commitment to service and community. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Funeral departing the Matthew Funeral Home 2508 Victory Blvd on Saturday May 31st at 9:15 am. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Blessed Sacrament Church at 10AM with interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
