Obituary of Gloria Scaglione

Gloria Josephine Scaglione (nee DePaola), a loving sister, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, peacefully passed away with rosary beads in hand, on June 10, 2025 at the age of 95 in Staten Island, New York.

Gloria was born in Manhattan, moved to Staten Island as an infant and has lived here ever since. She married Leo Scaglione in 1950 and lived in New Springville since 1965.  She worked as a school aide for 37 years at PS 60 and was cherished by all.

Gloria was a devout Catholic and a devoted parishioner of Our Lady of Pity Church for 60 years, attending mass every day until she was 90 years old. She was a member of the church prayer group and taught CCD in the 1980's. She prayed for her loved ones every day and those who were ill. Her prayers were powerful and meaningful to so many.

She lived for her family including her three daughters and three son-in-laws.  She witnessed her four grandsons get married and enjoyed her long walk down the aisle as a guest of honor at each of their weddings.  She welcomed five great-granddaughters and one great-grandson to the world and her legacy lives on with several great-grandchildren being named after her in her honor.

Gloria was well known for her love of many things, including cooking, drinking beer, pizza and chinese food,  long phone calls, getting her hair done, doing the rosary, plastic bags, loose change, Turner Classic Movies, NY Yankees, NY Rangers, NY Giants, Betty Boop, John Wayne, and Joe DiMaggio.

For the past 40 years, Gloria has been referred to as "Mia", coined by her first grandson, which means "Mine" in Italian. Anyone who crossed paths with Mia Gloria, or heard about her, was immediately enamored by her charm and her wit.  She was truly a legend and will be sorely missed.

She is survived by her daughters: Carol DelGaldo (Nicholas), LeeAnn Colacurto (Robert), Judith Frangipane (Salvatore). Grandmother to: Robert (Michelle), Michael (Jenn), Salvatore (Pallavi), Nicholas (Amber).  Great-grandmother to: Mia Juliet (8), Leena Josephine (6), Emma Gloria (5), Demi Jean (4), Michael Robert (1), and Sailee Maya (1).  She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Carmela Giordano. She was predeceased by her husband Leo and brothers Philip and Dominick.

Funeral from the Matthew Funeral Home, Inc., 2508 Victory Boulevard, on Saturday, departing at 9:00 AM.  Mass of Christian Burial will celebrated at Our Lady of Pity R.C. Church at 9:30 AM.  Interment to follow at Moravian Cemetery.  Family and friends are invited to visit on Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM.
