Obituary of Lalu John Manamoottil

Lalu John Manamoottil was born on July 28, 1961, to Manamoottil Mathai John and Mariamma John in Aranmula, Kerala. He was one of 4 siblings. While in India, Lalu began his career as an electrician in the Travancore Tea Estate in Vandiperiyar, Kerala. In 1990, he went to Dubai where he worked as a store keeper.

In 1995, he married Suma from Kavunkal Family, Ranny, and they had one son, Richard. Outside of work, Lalu had a deep love for cricket and badminton, two passions that brought him joy and fun with family and friends. In 1997, he went to Saudi Arabia where he worked for Coca Cola, until he immigrated to the U.S. in 2005 with his family.

In the U.S., he worked as a clerk for Mini Circuits and later served as a dedicated stock worker for the MTA. No matter the job, Lalu took great pride in his work and was known for his dependability, work ethic, and kind spirit.

He was deeply devoted to his family and shared a special closeness not only with his wife and son, but also with his siblings and extended family. Lalu had a warm and affectionate bond with his brothers-in-law, Benny, Pappachen, Sabu, Saji, and the late Babychen, with whom he shared many meaningful memories and lasting friendships. Along with his family, Lalu was an active member of his church, The New York Pentecostal Assembly of Staten Island. He was known for his generous spirit and quiet humility—always ready to lend a hand with simple repairs, offer words of encouragement, or show up for others in practical ways. His kindness was felt by many.

In 2021, Lalu was diagnosed with terminal cancer—a challenge he faced with remarkable grace, strength, and courage. Even through the most difficult days, he remained unwavering in his Christian faith, drawing peace and hope from it until the very end. He received compassionate care throughout his illness from Richmond University Medical Center, New York Presbyterian Columbia University Medical Center, Staten Island University Hospital, and Seaview Hospital and Rehabilitation Center.

He is survived by his wife, Suma; his son, Richard; his siblings Jessy, Lincy and Benny, and Lovely and Pappachen; and his nephews and nieces, Vicky and Nella, Nikhil and Meenu, Tharish and Manju, Chithu, Nikitha, and Renju.

Lalu will be remembered for his quiet strength, his generous heart, and his willingness to help others in simple yet meaningful ways. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
