Obituary of Constance M. King

Life Reflections

Constance M. King (DeGroat), affectionately known as “Red,” “Connie,” and “Gram,” entered eternal rest on September 7, 2025, at the age of 87.

Born on March 26, 1938, in Staten Island, New York, she was the beloved daughter of the late Sylvia Phyfer DeGroat and John DeGroat. Constance was a proud lifelong Staten Islander, educated in the borough’s public schools and a graduate of McKee High School, Class of 1956.

On February 29, 1960, she married Julius E. King, with whom she shared ten years of love and partnership until his passing on October 29, 1970. Together, they built a legacy of family, faith, and perseverance that endures through generations.

Constance dedicated over 30 years of faithful service as an Office Associate with the New York City Board of Education, retiring in 2000. Colleagues, friends, and family will remember her for her hard work, dedication, and delightful spirit.

Constance was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose love, strength, and humor left an indelible mark on all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her beloved children, Julius E. King Jr. and Marilyn King; her granddaughter, Tarsha King; and her siblings Marilyn Carter, Sara Henry, Barbara Illidge, Christie DeGroat, George DeGroat, and Henry DeGroat.

Constance will always be remembered for her vibrant spirit and the passions that brought her joy. She was a devoted fan of Johnny Mathis and the New York Giants, and she especially cherished the holiday season, especially Christmas, when her warmth and enthusiasm filled her home with love. Her collections of snowmen and clown figurines brought her delight, and her laughter brought comfort to those around her.

She leaves her devoted grandchildren and great-grandchildren to cherish her memory: Julius King III & Kawanna King and their children, Kayan Matoo, Julius King IV, and Kiara King; Tyrell King Sr. & Nirlyn King and their children, Tyrah King, Tyrell King Jr., and Tylyn King; Arthur King, Ariel King, Michael King, and Ashley King; Her loving siblings, Marshall DeGroat and Eleanor Johnson, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and dear friends.
