Obituary of MaryAnn Scalera

MaryAnn Scalera (Carrasco), born in Detroit, Michigan in 1947, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family.

Raised by her devoted single mother, Josephine Carrasco, MaryAnn learned strength, independence, and compassion at an early age — qualities that defined her throughout her life.  At the age of two she moved to Myrtle Avenue on Staten Island where she lived with her mother and brother, Joseph.  She graduated from Port Richmond HS, where she met her husband Andrew Scalera (1946–2021). Together, they built a beautiful life and family.

MaryAnn’s proudest role was that of mother. She was the heart and soul of her family — a constant source of love, guidance, and support for her children: Lisa DeLuca, Wendy Sercia-Martorano (Carl), Tracy Laffey (Brian), and Andrew III (Tracy). She was lovingly known as “Nana” to her cherished grandchildren: Dennis, Anthony, Nicholas, Andrew, Kaylee, and Madison.

MaryAnn had a deep love for traveling, the beach, gardening and the magic of Broadway. She treasured her trips to Manhattan, where she could lose herself in the lights, music, and emotion of a live performance. Her appreciation for beauty and creativity was evident in every part of her life — especially in how she made her home a warm and welcoming place for all.

The holidays were particularly special to MaryAnn. She found great joy in decorating her home, turning each season into a celebration filled with love, laughter, and family togetherness. Her festive spirit made every gathering memorable and filled her family’s hearts with joy.

To her family and friends, MaryAnn will always be remembered for her radiant smile, infinite kindness, and the joy she brought to every room she entered. Her legacy of love, grace, and creativity will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
