Obituary of Nicholas James Orlando

Nicholas James Orlando was born on December 23, 1959, to Nicholas and Vivian Orlando in Brooklyn, NY. Nick was one of five children: older brother Frank Orlando, younger sister Joanne Richards, and two younger brothers, Steven Orlando and Christopher Orlando. As a child his family moved to Staten Island and Nick  attended St. Christopher's School. When he was 9 years old, he began helping his father deliver bread from a family-owned bakery. Nick attended New Dorp High School for his freshman year, then the family then moved to Arizona, where they opened Manhattan Bagels, the first bagel shop in Tempe, AZ. Nick became a third-generation baker, learning to make bagels and bread. He also attended Paradise Valley High School and a baking school in Arizona, learning new baking techniques. Several years later the family moved back to Staten Island. Among other jobs at Caggiano's and Heartland Bagels, he became a baker for King Kullen Supermarket and then baker and bakery manager for Waldbaum's Supermarket. It was at Waldbaum's that he met his future wife, Christine Noll. They were married on June 16, 1990. Nick brought Christine on vacation to Arizona a few times, and she fell in love with the state. They moved to Phoenix in 1992 and started their family: a daughter, Brittany, and a son, Nicholas. Nick was extremely close to his mom and siblings and the distance  between them was hard for him. He moved his family back to Staten Island in 2000. Nick owned his own bakery for a short time, but the long hours put a strain on his young family. He then started a 24-year career as a bakery manager for Saker ShopRite Supermarkets in New Jersey. Nick's favorite things included rooting for the New York Mets and the Dallas Cowboys. He loved outings and vacations with his family and celebrating holidays with his siblings, nieces and nephews. Nick enjoyed going to concerts, especially to see his favorite band, The Rolling Stones. Nick retired from ShopRite in March 2025. He and Christine eagerly returned to Arizona. In the short time back in Arizona, he worked as a part-time baker for Schlotzsky's in Mesa. He became a regular attendee at Central Christian Church and volunteered in ACTS, a ministry dedicated to helping and serving the homeless. In addition to his immediate family, Nick is survived by dozens of cousins, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and a grand-nephew.
