Obituary of Lena Gencarello

Born on August 7, 1930 in Brooklyn, New York, Lena was the beloved daughter of Anna (Perri) and Louis Montalto. She was an identical twin to her sister Fanny San Felippo and a cherished sister to Nunzio, Joe, and Frank. She is predeceased by her parents and her siblings, whose memories she carried with her throughout her life.

Lena was a Bobby-soxer and carried her love of Frank Sinatra throughout her life. His music was a staple in her home, and his photos were on display, including a drawing her grandson Gregory made for her that was hung proudly in her dining room.

Lena was a gifted seamstress who specialized in making bridal gowns. She poured these talents and love into making Halloween costumes for her grandchildren and even made dresses for her granddaughter Samantha’s American Girl dolls.

Family was the center of Lena’s world. She loved cooking, baking, and filling her home with loved ones gathered together. In her later years, she found immense joy in spending time with her great-granddaughters, whose laughter and energy brought her delight.

Lena also cherished her friendships. Whether sharing coffee at home with friends or enjoying lunches and dinners out, she valued the companionship and simple pleasures of time spent together. A devout Catholic, her faith was a guiding light throughout her entire life.

She was married to the love of her life, Louis Gencarello, who passed away in December 2017. Together they built a family rooted in love, tradition, and devotion.

Lena is survived by her sons John (Carol) and Stephen (Deborah); her grandchildren Gregory (Akiko)Samantha (Eric), and Nicholas; and her precious great-grandchildren Charlotte, Mackenzie, and Jonah. She will be remembered for her generosity, her warmth, her recipes, and the deep love she shared with all who knew her.

Lena’s legacy lives on in the family she cherished and the many lives she touched with her kindness and grace.
