Obituary of Mary Ann Johnston

Mary Ann Johnston, 75, of Westerleigh was called home by the lord on His birthday, December 25, 2025. As a reporter for the SI Advance, she covered a diverse array of stories, ranging from high-profile crimes to community events and other human-interest stories. Perhaps the most notable story she covered was exposing the deployable and inhumane conditions at the dental clinic at Willowbrook State School during the 1970s. Her coverage prompted other reporters to investigate the atrocities occurring there, eventually leading to the State's closure of the school. A devout Catholic, she leaned on her trust and faith in God to relive her suffering in life. Her faith was a driving force in her life and was an inspiration to many. She was a member of the Dominican Third Order Laity and Legion of Mary. She served as a Eucharistic Minister-providing Communion and comfort to homebound parishioners of Holy Family, as well as to residents at Seaview Nursing Home. In so doing, she fulfilled the words of Mother Teresa – "We can do no great things, only small things with great love." "Even a smile", she believed, "can make a difference to those who are sick, lonely and don't have anyone." Despite battling health issues throughout her life, she never wavered from her faith. "Bitter or better" was one of her mottos. "I offer everything up to the Lord", she'd say. "I put all my faith and trust in Him." That faith and trust enabled her to persevere and to give back to others. Mary Ann lived a life of service to the Lord and to the community. She will be remembered for her unwavering faith, selflessness, kindness, generosity and her devotion to the Lord and the Blessed Mother. Funeral departing the Matthew Funeral Home on Tuesday 12/30 at 10:00am. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Family Church at 10:30am. Family and friends may visit the Matthew Funeral Home on Monday 12/29 from 4-8pm.
