Obituary of John Bertone
John Bertone, 90, of Sunnyside, Staten Island passed away in his home on January 01, 2026. He was born in Santa Maria del Molise, Italy on December 14, 1935, to Addolorato & Elisabetta Bertone. He was the oldest of six children. John came to the United States at the age of 16. He worked and established a residence in New York City and slowly brought his family to join him in the states. He met his future bride Marie, in New York.
John and Marie married in 1954 and recently celebrated their 71st anniversary in July. Together, they raised four children. They settled in Staten Island in 1965. John is survived by his wife; Marie. His children; Michael, (Jacquelyn), Joseph, (Mary), Lisa, (Charlie pre-deceased) & John, (Cyndi). Ten grandchildren; Jeffrey, Joseph, Christina, Nicholas, John, Emily, Victoria, Alexander, Matthew & Lucas and six great grandchildren; Alexandria, Adalyn, Parker, Jack, Ethan & Chloe. John loved to spend time with his growing family.
John worked as a general concrete labor foreman for Dick Underhill Joint Venture. His expertise in the trade helped build many of the skyscrapers and buildings in Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx and even up in Connecticut. He retired in 1990 during the construction of Metrotech Center in Brooklyn.
John continued the Italian traditions he learned in Molise and made sausage, prosciutto, homemade wine, tomato sauce, and many types of jarred vegetables. His true passion though, was his garden. Some people have a green thumb. John's green-streak ran completely up his arm. He transformed his yard into a huge garden and supplied his family, friends and neighbors with fresh vegetables, produce, flowers and herbs, usually more than you could finish. John also enjoyed travelling.
John had a huge heart and gave to all, with no thought of reward. All who had the pleasure to know John experienced his kindness, generosity, patience, a helping hand or a story from the old country. He will be truly missed. May he rest in eternal peace.
In John's loving memory, a tree may be planted in his honor at www.thegiftedtree.com
