Obituary of Albert A. Maniscalco

Albert A. Maniscalco, 'Front Man' for the Generation Gap, Passes at 84 Albert A. Maniscalco, born April 8, 1941, in Brooklyn, New York, to Mary and Anthony "Doc" Maniscalco, passed away after a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. He was raised in Bensonhurst, where he attended P.S. 112 and Shallow Junior High School before graduating from Lafayette High School. Unsure of his career path after graduation, Al reluctantly followed the advice of his Aunt Mary and pursued hairdressing, a decision that would shape much of his professional life. For nearly four decades, Al owned and operated Michele Coiffures on Manor Road, styling hair for the Todt Hill elite and the surrounding Manor Heights community. Situated between the original Alfonso's Pastry Shop and White House Beer Distributors, the salon became a neighborhood fixture. Alongside Alfonso Campitiello and Gus and Pat Arumbages, Al helped make Manor Road a vibrant hub of local life. Known for his compassion and generosity, he frequently made house calls to clients unable to leave their homes due to illness. Later in his career, Al worked at various local salons before lending his meticulous skills to Island funeral parlors, where he prepared loved ones for their final farewell. Families often expressed deep gratitude for the comfort his work provided during their most difficult moments. Some of Al's fondest memories were made during summers spent at Budd Lake, New Jersey, where his grandfather had purchased land and built a family compound in the 1940s. Along with his brother Nathan, cherished cousins, and extended family, Al spent carefree days swimming, playing, and helping with farm chores. Even after marrying his beloved wife, Gilda, he continued visiting Budd Lake with their son, Anthony. His daughter Jeannine recalled that he often became emotional when reminiscing about those summers, saying, "Some of my fondest memories were playing with my cousins for hours, milking cows, with not a worry in the world." Al met Gilda while singing in the Saint Finbar Church choir. Captivated from the moment he saw her, he pursued her until she agreed to a date and the rest was history. They were married on August 11, 1962 at Saint Finbar Catholic Church, which was followed by a massive celebration at the Cotillion Terrace with nearly 400 family members and friends. Their son, Anthony Albert, was born a year and a half later, followed four years later by their daughter, Jeannine. In 1966, the family left Brooklyn and moved to Great Kills where they still reside. Music was Al's lifelong passion. In the early 1970s, he joined his cousin Tony Modafferi and famed FDNY trumpeter Jules Pontecorvo to form the New Sound Orchestra. In 1978, Generation Gap was born. As its charismatic frontman, Al entertained thousands over nearly four decades at weddings, anniversaries, sweet sixteens, private parties, lounges, corporate events throughout the five boroughs and the Tri-State area. Famous for his signature red, white, and blue jacket with matching top hat, Al thrilled audiences with show tune standards, culminating with his show-stopping rendition of "New York, New York". Whether leading conga lines in ruffled sleeves singing "Copa Cabana" through catering halls, singing the timeless ballad "Evergreen" for countless couples in a spotlight dance on their wedding day or performing his iconic duet of All I Ask of You from The Phantom of the Opera with band mate Marge Raymond, complete with cape and mask as Raoul. Al consistently brought crowds to their feet. In 1976, the Maniscalco family traveled to Disney World to participate in the Bicentennial Celebration, their largest family vacation at the time. Two years later, they discovered Villa Roma Resort in the Catskill Mountains, beginning an annual tradition during week 32 affectionately known as "The Party Re-Zoom's." Al arranged seating for shows, entertained friends and family, and often took the stage with longtime friends, creating memories that would last a lifetime. During the winter months, Al and Gilda enjoyed time at their timeshare in Delray Beach, forming lasting friendships with families from across the country. Following a routine hip surgery, Al experienced complications that led to the onset of Parkinson's disease. On October 4, 2021, he entered Seaview Rehabilitation Facility, where he remained until his passing. Even during difficult times, his humor never faded; he was known to quip, "I don't know how I got roped into this place," bringing smiles to those around him. Al was loved by all who knew him. His warmth, generosity, talent, and ability to make everyone feel special left an indelible mark on family, friends, clients, and audiences alike. He will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Al was predeceased by his parents Mary and Anthony Maniscalco. He is survived by his beloved wife Gilda Maniscalco; his devoted children Anthony Maniscalco (Cheryl), Jeannine; his cherished Grandchildren, Alanna Piccirillo (Daniel), Lexi Savino and Anthony A. Maniscalco Jr; his precious great grandchildren, Sophie and Jack Piccirillo; his brother Nathan Maniscalco (Linda), his brother in law Dominic Saglibene (Linda). Family and friends will gather on Saturday, 1/17/2026 7:00pm - 9:00pm /// Sunday, 1/18/2026 2:00pm - 8:00 pm. Funeral will be Monday morning, 1/19/2026 in Matthew Funeral Home departing at 10:00am followed by a Mass at St. Clare Roman Catholic Church at 11:00am. A private cremation to follow.
