Obituary of Maria Accettura

Maria Accettura, age 90, of Brooklyn, New York, passed away on January 16, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of faith, strength, elegance, and deep devotion to her family. She was born in Mola di Bari, Italy, where she spent her early years before marrying her beloved husband, the late Nicola Accettura, in 1960. Soon after their marriage, they emigrated to the United States, beginning a new chapter built on hard work, love, and family. She is survived by her two daughters, Maria Battaglia, married to Frank Battaglia, and Cecilia Kobel, married to Erik Kobel. Through her daughter Maria, she was the proud grandmother of two grandsons: Anthony Battaglia and his wife, Charlotte; Nicholas Battaglia and his fiancée, Abbie. Through her daughter Cecilia, she was the proud grandmother of Michael and John Kobel. As of January 13th, she was honored with a new title of great grandmother to Leona Brynn, daughter to Anthony and Charlotte. She is also survived by her beloved brother and best friend, Pasquale Mola, and his wife, Grazia, as well as many loving nieces and nephews. As a devoted homemaker, she took great pride in caring for her home and nurturing those she loved most. Her greatest joy was her family, especially her grandsons, whom she adored and cared for with endless love and attention. She was known for her impeccable sense of style—a true fashionista and a classy lady who always presented herself with elegance and grace. Her creativity shone through her love of sewing; she lovingly made matching outfits for her daughters as little girls and was always ready to mend and hem with skill and care and they grew older. An avid gardener, she found peace and happiness tending to her garden, growing herbs, plants, and flowers. She also cherished time spent socializing at her social club, where friendships were rooted in shared traditions and a strong Catholic faith. A devout Catholic throughout her life, she remained steadfast in her faith in God until the very end. Her faith guided her actions, sustained her through hardships, and shaped the way she lived and loved. After the loss of her husband at the age of 64, she demonstrated remarkable courage and independence. She continued on her own, managing her finances, caring for her home, building friendships, and living with dignity and resilience. She will be remembered for her strength, faith, elegance, generosity, and unwavering love for her family. Her presence will be deeply missed, but her spirit and values will live on in all who knew and loved her. Funeral from the Matthew Funeral Home, Inc., 2508 Victory Boulevard, on Tuesday, 1/20, departing at 10:30 AM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary Mother of Jesus R.C. Church, 2326 84th St, Brooklyn, NY 11214, at 11:30 AM. Entombment will follow at Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY. Family and friends may visit on Monday, 1/19, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM.
