David Sung Ok Choe was born on March 17, 1941, in Korea. His parents were Choe Hung-gil and Yu Du-rip. Korea was one country, occupied and colonized by Japan, when David was a child. His family fled to the south as refugees when the United States and Soviet Union divided Korea along the 38th Parallel, precipitating a war in which four million people died and every village, town and city was destroyed. Yu was not David’s biological mother, who is unknown.
David was a Vietnam War veteran who served in the ROK Marine Corps as part of the 350,000-strong Korean contingent supporting the United States Military. After the War, David moved his family to Sydney, Australia, and then New York City to provide a better life for his children. David owned and operated the Staten Island Fish Market for many years and eventually became president of the Korean American Grocers Association (KAGRO). He led KAGRO in marching for racial justice and often helped the African-American community in which his business was located.
David’s wife, Maria Jong-ja Choe (nee Kim) preceded him in death.
David was a devoted father and grandfather. He is survived by three sons: John, Joseph, and Henry. He will be missed.
