Obituary of Marshall E. DeGroat

Marshall DeGroat was born on April 3, 1943, the seventh of nine children to Mr. John Henry DeGroat and Mrs. Sylvia Phyfer DeGroat. He was the second oldest of three sons. A true free spirit, Marshall was rarely seen angry or frustrated and was almost always wearing a smile that reflected his gentle nature and easygoing heart.

In his younger years, Marshall proudly served in the military. After his service, he worked as a cook at Staten Island Hospital and later spent many years in construction, always willing to do honest work and lend a helping hand wherever it was needed.

In his later years, Marshall dedicated two decades of service to Project Hospitality, working in the pantry before entering full retirement. He enjoyed life at his own pace—spending his days with scratch-off lottery tickets and watching golf on television alongside his brother, Junie, fully embracing life on his own terms.

Marshall was not only an exceptionally handsome man, but also kind, gentle, loving, and deeply caring—truly an all-around remarkable individual. He was known for his witty one-liners, one of his favorites being, “Let me hold something ‘til my back gets straight.” His vibrant personality endeared him to everyone he met, and his love—unconditional and pure—was felt by all who knew him.

He was an extraordinary father, grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend. Marshall leaves behind a cherished legacy in the hearts of his children: Marsha Lloyd, Marshall Butler, John DeGroat, and Sekema Newton; his grandchildren: Diana Dale, Tomas Dale, Elaine Franklin, Carter DeGroat, Joshua Butler, Katelynn Thomas, Hailey Bird; and his great-grandchildren: Jada Dale, Esa Dale, Zion Powell, and Purple Dale. He is also lovingly remembered by his many nieces and nephews.

In closing, Marshall was a true gentleman who would selflessly give his last to help someone in need. He will be profoundly missed and forever remembered. He has gone home to reunite with his parents, John and Sylvia; his sisters, Marilyn, Sarah, Barbara, Constance, Eleanor, and Christine; and his brothers, Junie and George. A new street in Heaven is now named Brewster Street in his honor.

Rest in Peace, Marshall “Hammer” DeGroat.

Visitation at the Matthew Funeral Home, Inc., 2508 Victory Boulevard, on Saturday, 1/31, from 3:00 to 7:00 PM.
