Obituary of James J. Hogan

Jim Hogan was born on February 4, 1946, to James S. Hogan and Catherine Veronica (O’Grady). He was raised in the New Brighton section of Staten Island, where he attended and graduated from Curtis High School.

Shortly after high school, Jim met the love of his life, Maria Jean Manzullo, at the local soda shop “Chic’s” following a basketball game. At the age of 18, Jim was drafted and proudly served his country in Vietnam as a Military Police Officer for two years.

Upon returning home, Jim and Maria became engaged and were married on May 10, 1969, at St. Teresa’s Church on Staten Island.

Jim began his career at Con Edison, where he worked his way up through the years and ultimately retired as an Inspector with Construction Management. He was also deeply involved in union service, proudly representing his fellow Local 3 members as Vice Chairman for Staten Island in 2001.

Jim and Maria made their home in the Westerleigh section of Staten Island, where they raised their two children: their daughter, Kelly Maria, born in 1971, and their son, James Joseph, born in 1977. During this time, Jim continued his education and earned an associate degree.

In addition to his work at Con Edison, Jim was a partner in South Shore Video and Alarm on Hylan Boulevard, along with his Con Edison brother Carmine Nuzzolo, Ronnie Nuzzolo, and Richard Malkowski. The business was successfully operated until it was sold in 1988. Over the years, Jim was also the successful owner of several other businesses.

In retirement, Jim enjoyed spending time at his lake house, golfing, boating, and making memories with family and friends. In 2013, Jim and Maria relocated to a 55-and-over community in Monroe Township, New Jersey, where Jim proudly served on the steering committee of the community’s Veterans Group.

Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Maria; his daughter, Kelly Maria Aguilera (Roger); his son, James Joseph (Danielle); his sisters, Jo-ann Haley (Mike) and Mary Gambardella (Albert); and his cherished grandchildren, Kadie Maria, Roger (R.J.), and Paige. He is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Jim was predeceased by his sisters Kathleen Senk and Eileen Hogan, and his brother John Hogan.

Friends and family will be received at Matthew Funeral Home, 2508 Victory Boulevard, Staten Island, NY 10314, on Sunday, February 1, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. A Mass will be held at Saint Teresa on Victory Blvd. on Monday, February 2, at 10:45 AM.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Jim’s name to the Wounded Warriors.
