Obituary of Angela M. Fumando
“Weep not for her—in her spring-time she flew
To that land where the wings of the soul are unfurled;
And now, like a star beyond evening’s cold dew,
Looks radiantly down on the tears of this world.”
Angela M. Fumando, a beloved educator, devoted animal lover, and cherished member of her community, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2026, at the age of 90.
Born on March 16, 1936, in Mariners Harbor, Angela was the 11th of 12 children born to Chiara and Carlo Fumando. She grew up surrounded by a large, loving family and carried that deep sense of connection with her throughout her life. She is survived by her brother Carlo, her sister-in-law Sonja, and many nieces and nephews who will forever hold her memory close.
In 1953, Angela answered a calling to serve others and entered the Maryknoll Sisters, embarking on missionary work in Mexico and Panama. Her years of service reflected her compassion, courage, and commitment to helping those in need. She returned to the United States in 1967 and was released from her vows in 1968, beginning a new chapter devoted to education.
Angela earned her Master’s Degree in Education and began her teaching career at P.S. 25 Bronx Bilingual School. She later continued her work on Staten Island, teaching at P.S. 44, P.S. 69, and briefly at P.S. 30. Through her years in the classroom, she touched countless lives with her patience, warmth, and dedication, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students.
Angela embraced life with joy and a sense of humor, often sharing her personal motto: “Eat dessert first!” She had a passion for travel and adventure, visiting Alaska, Hawaii, the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, California, Florida, Niagara Falls, and even Australia. One of her most cherished experiences was a whale-watching trip to Cape Cod.
A lifelong reader, Angela found great pleasure in books, especially the works of Agatha Christie and Robert James Waller. She also had a deep and abiding love for animals. Her generosity supported many organizations such as the National Wildlife Conservancy, the ASPCA, and the Staten Island Zoo. She was especially devoted to her beloved “Minnie” cats and took great care in looking after neighborhood strays.
Angela will be remembered for her kind heart, adventurous spirit, and unwavering love for both people and animals. She was dearly loved by her family and friends, and her presence will be deeply missed.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to animal charities, ALS organizations, or the Maryknoll Sisters.
