Kathleen C. Mortimer, mother and beloved Mimi and Grammy, passed away peacefully at home on April 12th, 2026. The daughter of Morgan and Beatrice Carmody and wife of James J. Mortimer Jr., Kathy lived nearly her entire life at her family home in Westerleigh.
Kathy attended St. Rita’s Elementary in her youth and graduated high school from St. Louis Academy. She attended and received a degree from Notre Dame College. Afterwards, she worked for the Metropolitan Insurance Company. She later went back to school to pursue a career in education, earning her Master’s degree in education from the College of Staten Island.
Kathy worked for the New York City Department of Education as a special education and science teacher at P.S. 373. She also was an adjunct professor at the College of Staten Island, helping to mentor and shape the next generation of educators.
You could often find Kathy tending to her beloved garden in the backyard, doting on her dogs, or reading a book with a hot cup of coffee on her back porch. She loved spending time each summer in LBI with her family. She travelled all over Europe with her husband, sisters, and friends. Most importantly, she adored being with and caring for six grandchildren.
Kathleen was preceded in death by her father Morgan, her mother Beatrice, her husband James, and her daughter Jill. She is survived by her two sons, James and George; her grandchildren, Veronica, Jake, Milana, August, Dylan, and Keira; her sisters, Elizabeth and Maryanne; and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly. She was a caring mother, grandmother, aunt, and godmother; a stalwart friend; and dedicated educator. She was loved by all who knew her and will be dearly missed.
There will be a viewing at Matthew Funeral Home on April 16th from 4-9 P.M. Funeral services will be held at St. Rita’s Church on April 17th at 10 A.M. with a burial at St. Peter’s Cemetery afterwards.
