Obituary of Andrew C. Cole
Andrew's story began on October 10, 1990, in Brooklyn, New York. Born a micro-preemie weighing just 1 pound and 15 ounces, his fight for survival began from his very first moments. After experiencing a setback that brought his weight down to only 1 pound and 2 ounces, Andrew demonstrated the strength and determination that would define his entire life. Against the odds, he persevered, growing into a spirited, energetic child whose determination never wavered.
His childhood was not without challenges, many stemming from his premature birth, but Andrew met adversity with courage and humor. Growing up in a bustling household with fourteen siblings, he learned early the value of family, loyalty, and community. He was well-known throughout his Brooklyn neighborhood, often following closely behind his older sister and immersing himself in the vibrant culture around him.
From a young age, two passions captured his heart: wrestling and music. While visiting the neighborhood bar where his sister worked, a four-year-old Andrew would entertain patrons by rapping on command. They would sit him atop a stool, showering him with applause, candy, soda, and spare change as he displayed a talent far beyond his years. What began as childhood entertainment soon became a lifelong calling. Music gave Andrew an outlet, a voice, and ultimately an identity. As DruGunn$, he became known for his extraordinary lyrical ability and was widely regarded by those who heard him as one of the most gifted freestyle artists around.
At the age of nine, Andrew and his family relocated to Staten Island, where he formed deep and lasting friendships that remained close to his heart throughout his life. He possessed a rare gift for finding beauty and humor in the unusual, for embracing individuality, and for helping others feel accepted exactly as they were. His positive outlook and open mind drew people to him, creating bonds that endured for decades.
After graduating from Curtis High School, Andrew dedicated himself to serving others through a career in social services and mental health. Whether supporting participants at AHRC NYC or caring for patients and clients at Richmond University Medical Center, he approached every interaction with compassion, patience, and genuine concern. Those who worked alongside him witnessed firsthand his ability to connect with people from all walks of life. He led with empathy, kindness, and love.
One of life's greatest blessings came when Andrew met his wife, Josephine, at a local music event in their late teens and early twenties. What began as a casual friendship unexpectedly blossomed into a deep and passionate love years later. Together they built a beautiful life and welcomed two incredible children, Rory and Saylor, born just sixteen months apart.
Of all the roles Andrew held, none meant more to him than being a father. His children were the center of his universe. Every decision he made, every sacrifice he accepted, and every dream he pursued was rooted in his desire to provide them with the love, stability, and opportunities he wished for in his own childhood. He adored Rory and Saylor beyond measure and dedicated every breath of his life to the family he created. His devotion as a husband and father was unwavering.
Andrew's love extended deeply to his mother, whose influence remained a guiding force throughout his life. He was equally devoted to his many nieces and nephews, showering them with affection, laughter, and support. These relationships helped shape the loving, attentive father he became.
Though family was his greatest accomplishment, music never strayed far from his heart. As DruGunn$, he cultivated a loyal following through his incomparable talent, authenticity, and passion for his craft. His words, whether spoken, rapped, or shared in conversation, carried the same message he lived by: lead with love, stay true to yourself, and never stop fighting for the people you care about.
Andrew's life was a testament to perseverance. From a one-pound infant fighting for survival to a devoted father, husband, caregiver, artist, and friend, he overcame countless obstacles with strength, humor, and grace. His time with us was far too short, but the impact he leaves behind is immeasurable.
He will be remembered for his infectious smile, his quick wit, his generosity, his unwavering loyalty, his extraordinary talent, and above all, the immense love he gave so freely to others. Andrew fought from his very first breath and spent the rest of his life fighting for the people he loved. He leaves behind a legacy that will never be forgotten.
