Grief doesn’t end after the funeral. For many, it is something they carry for a long time. Many instances can trigger feelings of grief and loss, birthdays, holidays, and anniversaries. Missing someone you’ve lost is perfectly natural. Honoring their memory can be a great way to heal and celebrate a loved one you lost. This article will focus on honoring a loved one with a memorial service around the anniversary of their passing.

Organizing a Memorial Service

Organizing a memorial service for a deceased loved one can take some time and planning. But there are many options depending on your scope and budget. Time of year can also be an important factor. Common examples can include a beachfront service, a family gathering at someone’s home, a barbecue in the park, or a catered gathering at a restaurant. Some families will choose to visit the gravesite of the deceased for their memorial service. Whether you choose to make it a grand event with many friends and family, or a solemn event with close loved ones, is up to you.

What to do at an Anniversary Memorial Service

A memorial service should be a celebration of the life and impact of your loved one. Consider giving a speech about their impact on your life, or ask another close loved one to say a few words.

Add More Depth to Your Memorial Service

There are many ways to make your service more meaningful. You can add ceremonial flair to the event by lighting candles, offering a moment of silence, or leading a group prayer. Consider making a photo collage or slideshow with images of your loved one.

Acts of Service

You can also add acts of service to your memorial event. You can plant a tree or collect money to donate to a charity in their name. If there is an area of a park or place of importance that your loved one cared about, consider making your memorial event a service project.

Looking Forward

A memorial service shouldn’t just be about honoring the loss of a loved one. It is also about looking ahead toward a life without them. Just because someone has died doesn’t mean they are never remembered. A loved one who has helped shape you into the person you are today will always be with you. Look ahead to a life where you have grown as a result of knowing this person. Honoring your loved one can help the wound of your loss heal. But it never truly heals. Carry your love for the deceased, and carry forward.
