Obituary of Vincent A. Merola

Vincent A. Merola, age 101, passed away on Thursday, August 20, 2020. He was the devoted son of the late Clemente and Josephine Merola. He was the beloved husband of the late Marie E. Merola (nee Paradise). He was the loving father of Donna Rothandler and her husband Cary, Vincent Merola and his wife Marybeth and Joseph Merola and his wife Tina. He was the cherished grandpa of Dawn Kulpa and her husband Robert, Shannon Rafferty, Jason Merola and his wife Teri Lynn, Justin Merola, Nicholas Merola, Christopher Merola, Michael Merola and the late Kelly Ann Rafferty. He was the dear great grandpa of Matthew and Ryan Kulpa. He was the fond brother-in-law of Patricia Della Rocca and Barbara Buckley and her husband James. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Vincent was born and raised in the town of Bulls Head on Staten Island. His parents came from Italy through Ellis Island. Vincent was one of 6 children that Clemente and Josephine were blessed with. Vincent enlisted in the Army during World War II and he was part of the second wave of the Normandy Invasion. He was injured during combat and received a purple heart for his courage and bravery. Vincent was taken Prisoner of War for a year and was liberated and brought home where he belonged. He was honorably discharged for his admirable and exceptional service and dedication to his country. After returning to the States, Vincent met the love of his life Marie; they spent 43 years married together until her passing in 1990. They were fortunate to have three loving children. Vincent worked at Baron and Batz for over 30 years and he also worked as a Maitre d' at the Staaten Restaurant. Vincent led a very active lifestyle; he was known for his rhythm and was considered to be a very smooth dancer. He also enjoyed camping, bowling, playing cards and taking trips to Atlantic City. He was an avid New York Yankee fan. Vincent will be remembered as a kind, caring and selfless man. He had a warm infectious personality who taught his children respect, patience, and humility. Vincent was a hero and a role model. He was an inspiration to all who had the pleasure to know him. Funeral from the Matthew Funeral Home Inc., 2508 Victory Blvd. On Monday, August 24, 2020 departing at 11:00 AM. A Graveside service will be held in St. Peter's Cemetery at 11:45AM. Interment will follow. Family and friends may visit on Sunday, August 23 from 2:00 to 6:00 PM.
