Dear brother of Carmel (Astoria, NY), Josianne Sultana ( Central Valley, NY), Grace Cassar (Gozo, Malta) and Maria Scibberas (Melbourne, Australia) and the late Fr. Anton Mompalao and John (Gozo, Malta). Mr. Mompalao was born November 9, 1952 in Malta on the island of Gozo. He emigrated to New York in 1974 and by 1983 moved, with his family, to the Poconos where he was a well-respected home builder. In mid-2000's he moved to Staten Island and became a site manager in his brother's business. A man devoted to is faith, his family and his craft, he proudly became an American citizen, but cherished and loved sharing his Maltese heritage. He was a fan of soccer and the NY Rangers. Affectionately called "Wonderful Walter", he had a gift for making people feel good, feel welcome, with a conversation, a great joke or a home-made meal. He was a talented maker of many trades, cook, story-teller, and artist. He made friends everywhere. He made people laugh and loved to laugh along with them. He was always thinking, always doing, always "tinkering". He did everything with excellence. "Wonderful Walter" will be missed but he will be remembered for the happiness and laughter that he brought to each day. For the ways he touched many lives and the ways he showed his love for living.
