Obituary of Pelagia Vlastakis

Pelagia (Peggy) Vlastakis passed away on Saturday, November 21, 2020. She was the loving mother of Thomas Vlastakis, Joann Vlastakis and Helen and Shawn Benson; cherished grandmother of William and James Benson; dear sister of Nikki and Mike Yiannoulatos and George and Virginia Papadogiannis. She is predeceased by her parents John and Helen Papadogiannis and brothers Evangelli and Vasili Papadogiannis. Peggy was born in Agia Galini, Crete and immigrated to the United States from Athens, Greece at the young age of 16 where she lived with her sister in Staten Island. She taught herself to speak and write English and acquired her citizenship at the age of 18. She went on to get married in 1968 and have three children who she loved dearly. Peggy was a very talented individual who mastered the art of crocheting, knitted intricate items and even sewed clothing. She enjoyed designing and knitting beautiful blankets and clothing for family members which are treasured by all. Peggy was also an excellent cook and everyone always looked forward to her delicious, traditional Greek dishes at family gatherings. She was a very gentle, loving person who focused on her family, including her grandchildren who brought her much happiness. Her family was her pride and joy and she will be missed dearly. Visitation will be at Matthew Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 24th from 4-7pm. A funeral service will be held at St. Nicholas Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church on Wednesday, November 25th at 9am and the burial service immediately thereafter at Fairview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to support mental health initiatives through Mental Health America via their website: mhanational.org. Due to Covid, all visitors must wear masks, practice social distancing, and be mindful that a wait to visit might exist due to capacity limitations. The family would also like to inform extended family and friends that they respect every individual's concern about Covid and understand that some may not feel comfortable visiting due to pandemic.
