Obituary of Pellegrino "Pete" Nuzzolo
Pellegrino "Pete" Nuzzolo, Navy Veteran of WWII and Korean War
Native Staten Islander Pellegrino Nuzzolo passed away from heart disease on Thursday, November 26, he was 95 years old. Born and raised in Rosebank, he married Domenica Guinto from Dongan Hills in 1947 and together they built a home there in 1951; they resided in that home all of their lives. Married for over 60 years they raised six children, five sons and one daughter.
He retired as a diesel mechanic foreman from the Jersey Street, NYC Department of Sanitation garage in 1983. Still wishing to get his hands dirty, he took a position at Japan Airlines at JFK airport and was in charge of their diesel fleet. He loved to work with his hands and was truly gifted.
Pellegrino joined the Navy at 17 years old and served on a landing craft, LCT 1066 as a machinist during World War II. He served his country with honor in the island hopping campaign from the Philippines to Japan. He also served in the Korean War and was a proud veteran. He was a distinguished member of the Hunter Pasqualini American Legion Post and bowled on their championship team. He enjoyed carpentry and was our Mr. Fixit, capable of solving problems with ease. In his early years he was a TV repairman making home visits toting his tube caddy and fixing televisions for friends and neighbors in the community. He was a gentle soul and always willing to lend a hand. If he saw a car with it's hood up, he would stop and assist as he could. He believed there was good in everyone. He was an active parishioner of St. Ann's for over 60 years, his faith never wavered. His face lit up whenever he was in the presence of his grand and great grandchildren. In his own words they are "God's Greatest Gift."
He is survived by his six children, Ronald Nuzzolo (Grace), Carmine Nuzzolo (Elaine), Laura Mooney (Charles), Richard Nuzzolo (Barbara), Steven Nuzzolo (Christina) and Joseph Nuzzolo. In addition he had 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. His wife of 62 years Domenica (Mickey) passed away in 2009.
Pellegrino will be remembered for his calm, kind demeanor, his loving disposition and humble personality. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be sorely missed by all who dearly loved him.
