Obituary of Alfred J. Thompson
Deacon Alfred J. Thompson, age 92, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on December 17, 2020 at Staten Island University Hospital South. Alfred was the devoted son of the late Alexander and Anne Thompson; he was the beloved husband of the late Jane Thompson (nee Crowley); Alfred was the loving father of Alfred Thompson Jr. and his wife Eileen, Rosemary Gallagher and the late Joseph, James Thompson and his partner the late Louis Roma and Jane Thompson. Alfred was predeceased by his daughters, late Theresa Geoghegan and Elizabeth Walsh. He was the dear father-in-law of Richard Walsh and the late Lawrence Geoghegan. Alfred was the cherished grandfather of Mariah Adams and her husband Chris, Anne Clark and her husband Matthew, Monica Bricker-Thompson and her husband Jason, Vera Borkowski and her husband Matthew, Ruth Peppers and her husband Shaun, Patrick Thompson and his wife Caroline, Peter Thompson, Aileen Thompson, Dr. Katie Gallagher and her husband Dr. Sieu Ha, Timothy Gallagher and his wife Dr. Noel Natale, Richard Walsh and his wife Jennifer, Christopher Walsh, Marybeth Kachtan and her husband Marc, Daniel Walsh and his fiancée Jennifer and David Walsh and the late Bernadette Thompson. Alfred was the fond great grandfather of 21 wonderful great grandchildren. He was the beloved brother of the late Alexander Thompson and Carol, Barbara Blount, Frank Thompson and his wife Olga, Robert Thompson and his surviving wife Genevieve.
Alfred was born and raised in the Bronx, NY. He attended and graduated from Tilden High School and later graduated from CCNY. Alfred went on to serve his country honorably during the Korean War; he enlisted in the Army and became a Staff Sergeant stationed in Labrador. He married the love of his life Jane in 1950 at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in the Bronx and they were blessed with 50 wonderful years together. They were devoted parents to their six children. Alfred was considered a pioneer in the security industry after enjoying many other successful business ventures. He served as a New York City School Teacher teaching English and Science and was an adjunct professor at the College of Staten Island. After his prosperous business career ended he focused on his faith and was ordained a Deacon at St. Patrick's Cathedral by Cardinal O'Connor in 1996. Alfred was a devout catholic who served as a Deacon at Holy Child R.C. Church and Our Lady of Good Counsel. He and Jane were very politically active especially in the National Right to Life Party.
Clearly Alfred accomplished a lot throughout his life. Those who were closest to him would describe him as a man of true faith who lived his life for God, his family and everything else.
Funeral from the Matthew Funeral Home Inc., 2508 Victory Blvd. on Wednesday, 12/23/2020 departing at 9:15 AM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held in Our Lady of Good Counsel Church at 10:00 AM which will be con-celebrated by the lead celebrant Bishop Whelan. Entombment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Family and friends may visit on Tuesday, 12/22/2020, from 3:00 to 6:00 PM.
Due to the Coronavirus, masks will be required be worn at the funeral home, church and the cemetery and social distancing enforced. Please note that capacity is limited to please understand there may be a short wait at the wake.
