Obituary of Rosa E. Gray

Rosa E. Gray, (nee Silvestro), age 98, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2020. She was the loving mother of Donna Lindsey and her husband Dean; beloved nanny of Deena Grupinski and her husband Christopher, Christina Sullivan and her husband Christopher; devoted great grandmother of Logan Grupinski. She is also survived by her dear friend Marcy Cafarella. Rosa was a native Staten Islander primarily residing in Mariners Harbor. She was a graduate of McKee Vocational High School, Class of 1939. Rosa went on to be a Licensed Practical Nurse for over 40 years working at St. Vincent's Medical Center. She was a charge nurse working primarily in the maternity unit and was relied upon heavily throughout her time at St. Vincent's. Her long career spanned several generations of patients. In 1985, Rosa retired from her role at the hospital but continued utilizing her nursing skills for several pediatricians, including Dr. Lina Merlino and the late Dr. Anthony Flagiello. Later in life, Rosa focused on spending time with her granddaughters and her great grandson. She was an avid New York Mets fan rooting for her "Amazin Mets." In fact, she went to the final game of the 1969 World Series, storming the field with her daughter Donna as they celebrated the victory. Rosa loved reading, bowling, taking trips to Atlantic City with her friends, traveling all over the world, and crocheting. She would crochet baby blankets, scarves and afghans for family and friends and at times, donating them to those in need. Rosa was way ahead of her time. She was a career woman who had a tremendous work ethic and was an inspiration to her daughter and family. Rosa will be remembered for her passion, strength, courage and compassion towards others. Her dedication to her work, family and friends was admirable and commendable. Rosa was someone her family looked up to and was a great role model for all. She will be dearly missed by all who were blessed to know her. Funeral from the Matthew Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 2508 Victory Boulevard.
