Obituary of Alda V. Salvesen

Alda Vivian Salvesen (nee Moro), of Staten Island, NY, died at her home at the age of 92, on January 17, 2021. She was born in Manhattan, New York, and settled on Staten Island in 1947. She attended and graduated from Central Commercial high School in New York City and worked for Good Housekeeping Magazine as a Secretary before her marriage and then moved to Staten Island. While on Staten Island she worked for the College of Staten Island as an Administrative Assistant for 25 years, before retiring in 1991, and moved to Piscataway, new Jersey in 1994. In July of 2000, she and her husband moved to Monroe Township, New Jersey, and in September 2003, she relocated to Roswell, Georgia. After Roswell, Ga., she moved back to Mansfield, New Jersey, and then came back to Staten Island, New York, in 2012. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 248 in Staten Island and was President while her son, Erling R. Salvesen, Jr. was Commander of the post. She enjoyed knitting, gardening, and taking trips to Atlantic City. Her husband Erling of 53 years passed away July 14, 2001. She is survived by her 3 children, Erling R. Salvesen, Jr. of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, Karen L. Martucci, of Staten Island, and Debra Gilliam of Marietta, Georgia. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren, Erling R. III, Jedd D., and Blake E. Finlayson, Robert C. Martucci, Samantha L. and Bill Gilliam, and 3 great-grandchildren, Eli, Elliana, and Ean Salvesen. She was predeceased by 2 siblings, the late Eleanor Gerry of Florida and the late Yolanda Hovell of Blairstown, New Jersey. Visitation at the Matthew Funeral Home, Inc., 2508 Victory Boulevard, on Wednesday, from 1:00 to 3:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 pm. A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, at 11:00 am, followed by interment in Moravian Cemetery. Due to Covid, all visitors must wear masks, practice social distancing, and be mindful that a small wait to visit might exist, due to capacity limitations.
