Obituary of JoAnn E. Whalen

Retired Teacher Leaves Lessons of Love JoAnn Elizabeth Whalen (Moschella), 75, died suddenly on the high holy day, April 20, 2021. She joins her recently deceased husband, Richard in his "quiet place". Throughout her life, Joann was a stable figure of support, laughter, and love. She never forgot a birthday, anniversary, graduation, or holiday. She is survived by her children, Matthew and Jillian. She also leaves behind sisters, nieces, nephews, and many great and great-great nieces and nephews. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Angela Moschella. JoAnn was proudly a lifelong Staten Island native who predated "the bridge". Born in West Brighton, a graduate of Curtis High School, JoAnn went on to graduate Notre Dame College with a degree in education and ultimately attained her Masters in Education from the College of Staten Island. She was a career teacher, serving PS 22 more than 30 years. For the duration of her studies and career she was at the side of her best friend, Marie Gorgia who passed in 2000. JoAnn married Richard in 1971, officially transitioning from J.E.M. to J.E.W., and together they raised their two children in New Dorp. She enjoyed socializing with her friends and family. When she wasn't at home, she could be found traveling the country with her family, immediate and extended. She was the QVC queen, who never showed up empty handed or allowed a dull moment. Yet in spite of her full-bodied personality, she had a quiet passion for crossword puzzles, reading, and Stolichnaya Elit (with just a twist of lemon, no vermouth). JoAnn's personality (and voice) was loud and she lived life to the fullest. She was always willing and able to help anyone in need. She was a selfless soul who literally always took care of others first and leaves a hole in the family circle. Her presence will be missed at every happy hour and family gathering. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
