Obituary of Joseph F. McCarthy

Joseph F. McCarthy, Jr., "Joe", age 77, of West Brighton, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2021. Joe was born on D-Day June 6, 1944 in Trenton, NJ to the late Dr. Joseph and Stella (Szczepanski) McCarthy. Joseph is lovingly survived by his wife of 52 years, Janet (Ball) McCarthy, his daughters Amy Mascia (Anthony) and Jill Gnerre (Joseph), and sister Janice Gian-Grasso (Joseph) of Philadelphia; as well as three granddaughters that were his pride and joy - Amanda Mascia and Campbell and Caiden Gnerre. Joe was predeceased in death by his sister Karen Kenefick of Connecticut. Joe attended Trenton Catholic Boys High School and moved to Staten Island to study biology at Wagner College. While at Wagner, he was a member of the Delta Nu fraternity and an offensive guard, #60, on the football team. Wagner College football was his passion. He loved telling stories about the games he had played in and he often boasted about how the team went undefeated in 1964. Well after graduating you could still find him on the sideline supporting the team he so dearly loved. And when he wasn't watching football, he was either golfing or fishing. He loved to be out on the water and even named his beloved Grady White boat 'The Seahawk' after the Wagner College football team. He enjoyed a good cigar, shooting pool with friends and was notorious for his jokes and one-liners. He loved to cook and was famous for his Sunday sauce that he prepared for family dinners. He was a car enthusiast and loved to keep up to date on the latest models. After graduating Wagner, Joe taught briefly at Curtis High School and P.S. 31 before going on to become a municipal bond salesman spending most of his career at Kidder Peabody, Dillon Read & Co. and Loop Capital. Joe was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be missed tremendously by all who knew him. Funeral from Matthew Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Inc., 2508 Victory Blvd, S.I., NY 10314 on Thursday, August 5th departing at 10:15am. Mass of Christian Burial will be at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 10 Austin Place at 11am. Private cremation to follow. Family and friends will be received on Wednesday, August 4 from 2pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm.
