Obituary of Phillip J. Maroon Jr.

Deacon Phillip J. Maroon, Jr., 75, of Staten Island, New York passed away peacefully on Friday, December 17, 2021. He is survived by his loving family, wife Kathy, who he was married to for 50 years and his sons James and Phillip. He is the cherished brother of Mary and her husband Calvin and Stephen and his wife Donna and his pre-deceased sister Carol and her late husband Frank, adoring uncle of Ann, John, Nancy and Stephen, great uncle to Anastasia and Elizabeth, cousin to Virginia and many more, a valued friend and confidante to many. Phillip was born in Brooklyn, New York to Nellie and Phillip Maroon Sr. and raised in Bay Ridge. He moved to Staten Island upon his marriage to Kathy in 1971. He worked for Kemper Insurance Company as an insurance underwriter for over 30 years before retiring. When he decided that the retired life wasn't for him, he returned to work for ISO as an Underwriting Consultant before retiring for good. Phillip was ordained a Deacon in the Catholic Church in 1990 and served the New York Diocese faithfully for 31 years. He served in St. Rita, St. Theresa and Saint Nicholas Chapel. Along with serving mass on Sundays, he took great pride in the many marriages and baptisms he took part of and performed. Some of his favorite moments were seeing the kids he baptized all grown up with their own families. He also performed prayer services at funeral homes and took care of many families in their grief. Perhaps, his greatest pleasure was leading the Miraculous Medal Novenas on Monday nights for most of the time in the parishes that he served. In his free time, Phillip enjoyed going to Flea Markets. He was our very own American Picker. There wasn't a bargain he could pass up. Tools, Fishing Poles and shirts were his kryptonite. Anything you needed, he had it and was yours to keep. He was a generous soul and will be deeply missed by all. God Bless Phillip! Funeral from the Matthew Funeral Home Inc., 2508 Victory Blvd. on Wednesday, 12/22/2021, departing at 9:15 AM. Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Rita's R.C. Church at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow in Moravian Cemetery. Family and friends may visit on Tuesday, 12/21/2021, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 6:00 to 9:00 PM. Regardless of vaccination status, all visitors must wear masks while attended all funeral services.
