I remember spending many summers at Uncle Steve and Aunt Mary's house in Carle Place, Long Island. They were always good times, especialy when the Good Humor ice cream truck would roll into the neighborhood.
One summer Jane and I captured/collected a bunch of lightning bugs and put them in a glass jar. Of course we had to punch holes in the lid so they could get air to survive. There were enough of them that they lit up a nice little space. Unfortunately, the next morning Jane's mom was VERY upset. Seems that we had made the holes a little too big and they all escaped... into the house.
They had a kitchen table that had a sliverware drawer in it. (I know showing my age here and half of you reading this are wondering... "what?" Jane didn't like peas, I think it was, and so we used to hide them in the silverware drawer.... till mom and Aunt found out!
Jane also taught me how to make potholders as well as become an expert hopscotch player (although not very fashionable for boys to be so at that time). We even made a few dollars selling the potholders we made.
For me living in New Jersey and Jane living on Long Island, we spent a far amount of time together those summers. Mary and Steve were really nice that way with most of their nieces and nephews... at least as I recall.
We also saw a lot of another at family gatherings. Mary's parents had four daughters, including my own mom. Family was always important for this group of aunts and uncles and the cousins. Thank God it was.
Although time has a way of moving us away from each other in today's' mobile society, those family times will always provide great memories of good times gone by.
Heartfelt prayers go out to her boys and brother Eric. May their memories of Jane and support of friends and family encourage them in their time of grief.
While it does not take away the sorrow of her passing, and it shouldn't, hopefully comfort will be taken from knowimg we will meet Jane again, along with our other loved ones, in due time.
