My father was born in the Bedford- Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn- right into tough times. He was the baby of 10 brothers and sisters. Their mom passed during his childbirth, so he was basically raised by all of them. He worked with my grandfather in a junk shop on Atlantic Avenue since the 8th grade. It was a family business that he felt was important to keep and stuck with it his whole life.
He grew up with no money or any luxury in life but he still grew up to be the richest person I know. He wasn’t rich from money, but it was from the love of the family and friends he was surrounded by. It always amazed me that he had the same group of friends at the end of his life that he had in the beginning. Some of my fondest memories as a child - and still until today – are listening to the way everyone speaks of him. He was someone who could always be counted on. Whether it was stories from his childhood or from his time in the Army - He was so loved and respected by everyone who knew him. -- And I wanted to be just like him.
In the recent months he regularly told us that he had a great and complete life - and never expected to see 85- especially without my mom. It’s been almost 15 years and my father has never been the same since we lost her.
One word that everyone always used to describe my father was that he was “tough”. But there was no mistaking it- she was the tough one in the family. He would tell me all the time that she took care of him and he was lost without her. Looking back at all the things we did when we were younger it is so easy to see how happy they were together. At least now they are finally reunited.
He loved a simple life. He loved the beach and to travel. He loved good food even though it was impossible to make anything hot enough for him. He loved to spend time with his family and friends. He loved to play cards and watch sports.
He was definitely not a man of many words. In fact sometimes he didn’t speak at all. He is the perfect example of the phrase “actions speak louder than words.” He may not have always said things like he loved you or he missed you - but he certainly made you feel loved and missed. Through the time he gave his family and the love he showed, but rarely proclaimed - We felt that love beyond words.
He was a great Father and Grandfather and taught us all so much. He didn’t sit me down for talks - instead he taught me by example. My father adored his 5 Grandchildren and I am so glad that they all got a chance to make memories with him. I will continue to tell them stories of him as long as I live. It is an honor to carry on his name. My father was always a rock and so strong for us- so we will all be strong for him now. I will do my best to continue to be the man he raised me to be.
