Obituary of Sadie Coppolino

Rosaria “Sadie” Coppolino (nee Lapira) passed away peacefully this past Wednesday October 19, five days short of her 98th birthday. Sadie was born on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in 1924 and spent her Summers in the South Beach section of Staten Island until finally moving there in her late teens. She met and married local South Beach resident, John Coppolino in 1945 and settled in the Rosebank area. Having graduated from Central High School of Needle Trades Sadie worked for several years as a seamstress in South Beach while raising three children until her husband John’s untimely death in 1962. Strong support from friends and family greatly helped Sadie survive that tragedy and that of the death of her daughter Maryann the following year. Forced to find more lucrative employment she quickly sharpened her typing skills and became a competent secretary. She worked first in a local law firm, then for the Amstar Corporation in Manhattan and finally at Gateway Bank in Staten Island before retiring in 1994. Sadie loved her simple life of spending time with friends and family, shopping, and tending her vegetable garden and was a long-time member of the Arrochar Friendship Club. Sadie is recently preceded in death by her son Anthony. She is survived by her son, Steven, daughters-in-law, Lorraine and Marie and Grandchildren, Marcel, Liliane and Clarice. Funeral from the Matthew Funeral Home, Inc., 2508 Victory Boulevard, on Tuesday, October 25, departing at 8:45 am. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Teresa’s R.C. Church (1634 Victory Boulevard) at 9:30 am. Interment to follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation on Monday, October 24, from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm.
