Obituary of Vincent Diorio
Obituary and History of a Heroic Staten Islander:
Vincent Diorio was born on November 9th, 1935, the son of Anna (nee Damato) and Michael Diorio, and raised on Staten Island, New York. Vincent was blessed with four caring sisters, Sally Coccoma, Marie Battista, and the late Frances Perricone and Anna Simmons.
Given his passion for learning, Vincent was a graduate of Port Richmond High School and Staten Island Community College. From 1954 to 1958, he served in the U.S. Navy as an IC Electrician and Second Class Petty Officer. In December 1959, he proudly joined the New York City Fire Department, Engine 3, 158 on Staten Island. In 1969, he rose to the rank of FDNY Lieutenant, Engines 252 and 153 (Staten Island), and in 1976 he was promoted to the rank of Captain, joining Engines 37 and 7 in Manhattan.
Vincent was later promoted to FDNY Battalion Chief in 1982, serving Battalion 23 on Staten Island until his retirement in April 1992. He bravely volunteered to assist emergency personnel on September 11th, 2001. In addition to his history as a lifelong Staten Islander, Vincent loved to travel and also resided in Toms River and Bayville, New Jersey. Among his many interests, he enjoyed home improvement, fishing, boating, crabbing, cooking, gardening, and especially his bowling team of FDNY retirees.
Vincent leaves behind his beloved wife, Jacqueline Lupo Diorio. His first, late wife was Audrey Perrine Diorio, and their three cherished children are Mary Ann Madison, Mark Diorio, and Doreen Diorio. Vincent’s beloved grandchildren are Ryan Schroder, Christopher Diorio, and Anna Diorio, and Kristina Mastroianni. Vincent is also survived by adoring nieces and nephews who were inspired by his devotion to public service, including his nephews, FDNY Battalion Chief August Orlando and retired Lieutenant Rocco Battista.
Vincent passed away peacefully in the loving presence of his family on December 5, 2022 at the HMH Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank, New Jersey. His family and friends will gather to celebrate his life in a viewing at Matthew Funeral Home, 2508 Victory Boulevard, Staten Island, NY 10314, on Sunday, December 11th and Monday, December 12th, 2022 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM. Vincent’s funeral will be held on Tuesday, December 13th, departing at 9:15 AM. A Funeral Mass will be in St. Adalbert’s Church at 10 AM. Vincent will be buried at Moravian Cemetery with full honors as an FDNY Officer and a veteran of the U.S. Navy.
