Obituary of Richard J. Sabella

Beloved Husband, father, and grandfather Richard J Sabella passed away January 1st 2023 at the age of 84 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on January 7th 1938, in Brooklyn. He served his country in the Army from 1957-59. Richie, as he liked to be called, joined the New York City Fire Department in the early 60’s at engine 235 Bedford Stuyvesant and after moving to Staten Island he transferred to engine 163 where he retired from after 30 years of service. He also was the Maître d’ at the Beachcomber and bartended at many restaurants on the Island. He loved the beach, the gym and sitting in the sun. Most of all he loved his family. He leaves behind his loving wife of 37years JoAnn his children Richard L. Sabella, Daniel A. Sabella and Diane L. Wright her husband John along with step children Scott Buono and wife Michelle and Maryellen Mezzacappa and husband Jeffery. Grandchildren Richard J II, Paige, Tori, Matthew, Julianna, Debbie Jo and Anthony. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation in memory of Richard. Funeral from the Matthew Funeral Home Inc., 2508 Victory Blvd. on Friday, 1/6/2023, a funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 10:00 AM. Entombment will follow in Resurrection Cemetery. Family and friends may visit on Thursday, 1/5/2023, from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM.
