Obituary of Wai Fong Hon
Wai Fong Hon, age 79, passed away on January 12, 2023. He was born on August 5, 1943 and spent his youth traveling the seas as a motorman. In 1965 he met the love of his life, Becky Hon. The pair were married in Hong Kong in 1966 and, over the course of a couple years, welcomed 3 amazing daughters into their lives. In search of a new adventure, the family immigrated to New York City in 1975 and braved the chaos of the Lower East Side, later growing the family by 1 with another daughter. During that time, Wai Fong Hon traded in his sailor's uniform for a chef's hat, slinging hot dishes in a small Chinese restaurant in the Financial District. In 1986 the family made the decision to move to Staten Island. There, he cooked delicious meals for the family as it continued to grow with the addition of son in-laws and grandchildren, his most requested dish being egg fried rice. Wai Fong Hon is survived by his wife, 4 daughters and 3 son in-laws, Nancy and Randy Cumberbatch, Puina Hon, Linna and Alan Asa, and Gina and Andy Lui, and 8 grandchildren and 2 partners, Calvin Hon and Huong Bui-Vu, Ashlee Hon and Patrick Diggins, Natalie Lui, Kaylee Cumberbatch, Sydnie Lui, Nathaniel Asa, Nicholas Asa, and Emilee Asa.
