Obituary of Sonja A. Brybag

Sonja Brybag, 84, of Staten Island, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2023, surrounded by her loved ones. She was the beloved wife of the late Ewald Brybag (2009), and loving mother of Carmelita Massa, Margo Vanenburg, Robby Brybag, Ingrid Mcbride, Henna Sarkis, Diana Giboney, and Jimmy Brybag. She leaves behind 16 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, as well as 3 siblings, (Ralph, Ruben, and Niffon); plus many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her mother Alma, father Eduard and her three siblings (Betsy, Johnny and Harry). Sonja was born and raised in Paramaribo, Suriname, and immigrated to the United States in 1975 alongside her family. She devoted her life to raising her children and building a strong family foundation for future generations. Sonja was a strong-willed woman with a zest for life. She loved telling stories and making people laugh. Sonja built her life around family and close friends. She also enjoyed hosting gatherings, cooking traditional surinamese food, and dancing. She was happiest when surrounded by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She touched many lives with her generosity and will be sorely missed. Funeral from the Matthew Funeral Home, Inc., 2508 Victory Boulevard, on Tuesday, 1/31, departing at 10:00 am. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Blessed Sacrament R.C. Church at 11:00 am. Private cremation will follow. Family and friends may visit on Monday, 1/30, from 2:00 to 5:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Burial of the cremated remains is scheduled for Thursday, 2/2, at 12:00 pm, at Resurrection Cemetery.
