Obituary of Dolores Scripps

Dolores, 84, passed away peacefully with her family by her side, at home on February 5, 2023, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. She was the beloved wife of Albert Scripps, who passed away in 1994; beloved mother of Eva Callahan (Robert) and Ronald Scripps (Jeannine); devoted grandmother of Richelle Laput, Cory Scripps, Kayla Callahan, and Shaun Scripps; loving sister in law of Robert Scripps; devoted friend of Rosie Robinson. She is the loving sister of Amalia Fernandez Chamizo (Pepe); loving aunt of Jose Manuel Fernandez and Eva Fernandez Chamizo, all of whom reside in Spain. In 1939, Dolores was born in Almeria Spain to Manuel Chamizo Barroso and Dolores Sola Garcia. Soon after the family moved to Malaga. At the age of 16 Dolores immigrated to the United States to study English and lived with her paternal uncle and his family. Dolores attended Samuel J. Tilden High School in Brooklyn. In spite of not knowing a word of English, she learned the language and graduated with honors. Dolores lived in Brooklyn with her husband and children until 1969 when the family moved to Staten Island. While her children were young, Dolores worked for the NYPD as a school crossing guard. Dolores continued her work as a school crossing guard until she found her true calling, working as a Nursing Assistant at various nursing homes and finally at Staten Island University Hospital where she remained until her retirement. Dolores loved working with patients. Coworkers have described her as extremely competent, empathetic, caring, and fun to work with. Dolores was a lover of all animals and spent much of her free time advocating for stray dogs and cats. She rescued many animals, sometimes adopting them herself, or finding them loving homes. In addition to her passion for helping animals, Dolores was an avid reader and loved to travel, especially throughout Europe; much of that time was spent with her family in Spain. She also enjoyed trying her luck in Las Vegas and Atlantic City with friends. She will be greatly missed and forever loved by her family, friends, and all whose lives she touched. There will be memorial gathering to celebrate Dolores’ life on Thursday, February 16, 2023, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Matthew Funeral Home located at 2508 Victory Blvd Staten Island New York 10314. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Dolores to the Staten Island Counsel for Animal Welfare or the Micheal J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
