Obituary of Elizabeth Papas

Elizabeth Papas (nee Panagakos), 84, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2023. She was the beloved wife of Nicholas Papas for 55 years; loving mother of Phillip Papas and his wife Lori Weintrob, and Peter Papas and his husband Erik; cherished grandmother (Yia Yia) of Sophia Papas and Joelle; dear sister of Peter Panagakos (Ruby) and Helen Arniotis (Late Peter). Mrs. Papas was predeceased by her parents Peter and Martha (nee Tsahalis) Panagakos and siblings Nick, John, Gus and Julie. She was also survived by several loving nieces and nephews. Mrs. Papas was born and raised in Sparta, Greece, and emigrated to the United States in the mid 1950's. She settled in Staten Island, and then moved to Brooklyn, before moving back to Staten Island after her marriage. In years past she held various jobs, but mainly at the former St. Vincent's Hospital, in the laundry department. Elizabeth was very involved in the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, especially with the choir, the Greek festival, and the Ladies' Philoptochos Society. She also enjoyed cooking Greek specialties, especially her spinach pie. Elizabeth also enjoyed dancing to traditional Greek music. She adored her granddaughter Sophia and enjoyed spending a lot of time with her. Funeral from the Matthew Funeral Home, Inc., 2508 Victory Boulevard, on Thursday, departing at 9:30 am. Funeral Service is scheduled at 10:00 am in the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Interment to follow in Ocean View Cemetery. Family and friends may visit on Wednesday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 pm.
