Obituary of Marie Rydell

Marie Rydell, 94, passed away peacefully at home on March 3rd, 2023, surrounded by her family. She was born Marie Sammartino in Staten Island and grew up in Dongan Hills. She attended Public School 11 and graduated from McKee Vocational and Technical High School in January 1947. Marie met and married Donald Rydell from Queens, N.Y. and had a loving marriage of 72 years. They settled in Great Kills for 22 years and raised three children. In 1980 they moved to Katonah, Westchester, N.Y. for a job relocation. Retiring to the town of Allenhurst on the Jersey shore in 1989, they enjoyed having their grandchildren visit for summer vacations. Marie was a devoted wife and loving mother and proud grandmother. She loved music, reading the newspaper and crossword puzzles. In retirement she became interested in learning Tai Chi as a form of exercise and practiced it for many years. Marie is predeceased by her baby grandson Matthew Alverson, her sisters Emily Holowitz and Elizabeth Schiappacasse, her brothers Frank Sammartino, Nicholas Sammartino and Anthony Sammartino. Marie is survived by her husband Donald, her daughter Dana McGowan and husband Francis of Staten Island and Port St. Lucie, Fla, her son Douglas and wife Carol, of Williamstown, Mass., her daughter Kristen Alverson and husband Robert of Staten Island and Melbourne Beach, Fla. And three grandchildren, Courtney McGowan, Stephanie Rydell, Samantha Rydell and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. The family would like to thank Marie’s Gentiva hospice team for their dedicated care and genuine love and support, especially Shawnna Roser and Karen Olivas. In lieu of flowers donations to the The Shrine of the Divine Mercy https://www.shrineofdivinemercy.org/ Visitation at the Matthew Funeral Home, Inc., 2508 Victory Boulevard, on Tuesday, 3/7, from 9:00 to 11:00 am. Funeral departing from the funeral home at 11:O0 am. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Holy Family R.C. Church at 11:30 am. Interment to follow in Moravian Cemetery.
