Obituary of Gary A. Nybro

Captain Gary A. Nybro, FDNY, 57 passed on April 4, 2023 surrounded by his wife and children, overlooking the trails he often hiked. Captain Nybro was born to Hans and Rose (Conti) Nybro and raised on Staten Island, where he attended Tottenville HS and graduated from St. John's University with a bachelors in accounting and a masters in finance. In 2002, he relocated to Rockland County, where his family remains. In 1993, he was sworn in as a firefighter with the FDNY and appointed to L9/E33, where he was on 9/11. After a promotion to lieutenant, in 2002 he was assigned to E40/L35. Finishing his career as a captain in the Richmond Avenue Firehouse E166/L86. Captain Nybro recently retired after 28 years of service. Gary was an avid fan of sports, especially the NY Giants and the NY Yankees. He enjoyed hiking, chatting up with the neighbors and his family time that included many years spent at the Jersey shore with his nieces. His truest passion was traveling. He spent many hours planning and executing trips for his family including seeing all 50 states and several countries. His dream was to see all the continents. He is survived by his wife, Sara (Portelle) of 29 years, his son, Erik and daughter Emily and his beloved pooch, Mara. His parents Hans and Rose, brother Raymond and sister Sharon Moran. In addition, his extended family and friends. After giving his life in service he will be dearly missed. Visitation at the funeral home will be held at 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm on Monday, April 10, 2023 at Matthew Funeral Home And Cremation Services, Inc. 2508 Victory Blvd. Staten Island, New York, United States 10314 Mass will be held the following day at 10:30 am Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at the Holy Family RC Church, 366 Watchogue Road Staten Island, New York, United States 10314 with his final resting place at 12:30 pm Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at Resurrection Cemetery (361 Sharrott Avenue Staten Island, New York, United States 10309).
