Obituary of Caterina Vitale

Caterina Vitale, 91, passed away May 6th. Beloved wife of the late Giusseppe Vitale, loving mother of Angela Edwards (Al), Catherine Rubin (Steve), Maria Verdi (Joe) Ninna Nonna to her eight grandchildren Michael, Anthony, Frankie, Christina, Victoria, Gabriella, Joseph, and Gianna all of whom will remember her for her ability to prepare a fabulous meal at any given time. She is also survived by her beloved sister Valentina Perla and her devoted brother Nicholas (Tony) A. DiMarzio (Concetta). Predeceased by her brothers Federico DiMarzio and Giuseppe (Pino) DiMarzio and brother-in-law Umberto Perla. She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews and cousins both here and in Italy. Caterina was born in Moncillioni, Campobasso Italy and emigrated, in 1956, to the United States on the SS Andrea Doria, settling in Staten Island. A skilled seamstress who worked for various clothing factories but most notable at Eve of My Lady, creating wedding gowns for brides. She was very proud that she made all three daughters their wedding gowns as well as many of their friends. She enjoyed gardening vegetables and fruits and could turn modest ingredients into gourmet meals. She was devoted to San Benedetta Martire, the patron saint of her hometown in Italy. She cared so deeply for the people around her and has had an impact on so many lives. She will be remembered and greatly missed. The family would like to thank the staff for the great care and compassion given at Seaview Nursing Home and Addeo Hospice House. Funeral from the Matthew Funeral Home, Inc., 2508 Victory Boulevard, on Wednesday, departing at 9:45 am. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Rita’s R.C. Church at 10:30 am. Entombment to follow in Moravian Cemetery. Family and friends may visit on Tuesday, from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm.
