Obituary of John Joseph Cassidy
John Joseph Cassidy, age 88, of Oakwood, formerly of Brooklyn, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2018, at Sunrise Assisted Living Home. He was the beloved husband of the late Monica (2011); loving father of John Patrick, Denis Andrew and his wife, Kristen, Kevin Francis and his wife, Cheryl, Regina Catherine Cassidy, and Diane Elizabeth Cassidy; cherished grandfather of 10 and fond great-grandfather of 2. He was also the oldest of 9 siblings, all of whom have pre-deceased him.
He was born and raised in Brooklyn, growing up in the Flatbush section. He attended High School in Brooklyn, and then earned his Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice from John Jay College. He enlisted and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Mr. Cassidy served proudly for 37 years with the New York City Police Department, retiring as a sergeant out of Police Headquarters in Manhattan. He served a two year stint privately, on a special security detail, protecting Frank Sinatra at the Waldorf Astoria. Some of his hobbies included listening to opera and classical music, travelling extensively and even spoke French and German fluently. He was also an avid Star Trek fan. John was a member of the Manresa Council of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the NYPD Emerald Society.
Funeral from the Matthew Funeral Home, Inc., 2508 Victory Boulevard, on Saturday, departing at 8:30am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Charles R.C. Church at 9:30 am. Family and friends will be received on Thursday and Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9pm. Interment will be scheduled at a future date at Manorkill Rural Cemetery, in Manorkill NY.
