Obituary of Anthony J. Bonventre

Obituary Anthony (Tony) Joseph Bonventre, 87, passed away at 12:27 AM on September 1, 2023. He was at home, surrounded by family and died peacefully after a long illness. Anthony was born at Staten Island Hospital on Castleton Avenue on April 11, 1936. He grew up in Tompkinsville with his family, moved to Sunnyside with his own family, finally settling in Bulls Head in 1984. Anthony graduated from McKee High School where he met his wife, Carmella Marino. Before he was married, he served in the Army as a certified sharpshooter during the Korean War Era. He was stationed in Germany, then Italy before returning to the United States. He married Carmella, his High School sweetheart on Memorial Day weekend in 1959. They were together until she passed away on February 1, 2023. He worked as a Barber with his father in the family’s Barber Shop on Victory Boulevard in Tompkinsville before his 35-year career as a Postal Worker at the Church Street Station Post Office in downtown Manhattan. After retiring he worked for 10 years at the former Staten Island Savings Bank in Stapleton. He loved to spend time with his family and host large family gatherings. He was famous for his homemade pizza on Christmas Eve and his antipasto on Easter Sunday. He was a very active member of Our Lady of Pity RC Church in Bulls Head. He was a lifelong member of the Holy Name Society and served as an usher at the 10:30 mass. He also volunteered at many church events and assisted the Senior Citizens Church Club. He loved to travel with his family or with the church clubs throughout the country. He also loved going to his grandchildren’s sporting events. He is survived by his daughters Virginia Cappelli (David), Patricia Bonventre and his son Frank Bonventre (Duane Poole). He is also survived by his: Grandchildren Toni Ann Owens (Scott), Marissa Ann Cappelli (Tyler Bruce) and David Cappelli, Great Grandson Anthony Owens (Isabella) and Great-Great Granddaughter Everleigh Sophia Owens. In addition, he is survived by many nieces and nephews. The funeral arrangements are as follows: Visitation will take place at Matthew Funeral Home at 2508 Victory Boulevard Staten Island on Monday September 4 and Tuesday September 5 from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Mass of the Christian Burial will take place at Our Lady of Pity RC Church in Bulls Head on Wednesday September 6, 2023, at 9:30 AM. Burial will take place with Military Honors at Resurrection Cemetery in Princes Bay after the mass.
