Obituary of Mathilda F. Farrell

Mathilda F. (nee Herden) Farrell, 88, of Staten Island, NY, passed away peacefully on Sunday September 17, 2023, at Richmond University Medical Center. She was born and raised in Wilkes-Barre, PA, the youngest of ten children. Mathilda was a graduate of St. Nicholas Grammar and High School. After high school Mathilda worked as a secretary for an electrical supply company and the telephone company. She met her first husband Robert Mahoney and they married in 1959. They had three children and lived in Norwood, PA. Robert passed away in 1966. After his passing Mathilda continued living in Norwood and met her second husband Thomas Farrell. They married in 1968 and moved to Staten Island, NY, due to Tom's employment. Mathilda and Tom had two more children, and Staten Island is where they raised their five children. Mathilda's second husband passed in 2000. She resided in Westerleigh until her passing. She was a communicant of Blessed Sacrament Church, West Brighton section of Staten Island, where she was an active member of the Mother's Guild and the Titan League. Mathilda was a diehard NY Mets fan and enjoyed her trips to Atlantic City. What brought the most joy to her life was her family, especially hosting Christmas Eve at her house, and spending time with them at Long Beach Island. She was so proud of all her grandchildren and all their accomplishments. Mathilda was predeceased by her first husband Robert Mahoney, her second husband Thomas Farrell, her four brothers, five sisters, and her daughter-in-law Debra Mahoney. She is survived by her loving children Linda Orender and her husband Kevin of Wall Township, NJ, Robert Mahoney of Staten Island, Thomas Mahoney and his wife Ursula of Staten Island, Laura Giuliano and her husband Steven of Valhalla, NY, and Mark Farrell and his wife Jennifer of Metuchen, NJ. Mathilda was the cherished grandmother of 14 grandchildren, Danielle, Kevin, and Ryan Orender, Bobby and Sean Mahoney, Christopher, Nicholas, Kirsten, Michael, and Matthew Giuliano, and Kaitlin, Mikaila, Delaney, and Madison Farrell. She also leaves behind a host of adoring nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Wednesday September 20, 2023, from 4-8 pm at Matthew Funeral Home 2508 Victory Blvd Staten Island, NY 10314. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 am on Thursday September 21, 2023, at Blessed Sacrament Church 1091 Forest Avenue Staten Island, NY 10310. Interment to follow at St Nicholas Catholic Cemetery, Shavertown, PA. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to American Diabetes Association online to www.diabetes.org.
