Obituary of Peter J. Conti

Peter J. Conti, age 94, passed away peacefully on April 14, 2018, at Richmond University Medical Center. He was the beloved brother of Annette Tormey, the late Joseph Conti, and the late Grace Pately. He was also survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and a great-great niece and a great-great nephew. Mr. Conti was born on May 7, 1923, in the Mariner's Harbor section of Staten Island. He was also raised there, and graduated from McKee Vocational and Technical High School. After graduation, he worked for Western Electric for a short time before entering into the Army Air Force. He served overseas in Italy, and reached the rank of Sergeant, during World War II in the 775th Bomb Squad. Peter entered the armed forces in 1943, and was honorably discharged in 1945. Upon his discharge, he started his career with Brooklyn Union Gas, serving in various states, installing natural gas pipelines. Later on he moved onto the New York City Transit Authority, working there for over 30 years, doing maintenance on escalators and elevators, before retiring in 1975. Peter was a founding member of the Mariner's Harbor Veterans of Foreign Wars (Post #5521). He was also the oldest member of the Mariners Harbor Yacht Club. In his spare time he enjoyed boating, fishing, bowling, and watching local sports teams. Funeral from the Matthew Funeral Home, Inc., on Saturday, departing at 9:15 am. Funeral Mass is scheduled at St. Michael's R.C. Church at 10 am. Interment to follow in St. Peter's Cemetery. Family and friends may visit on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm.
