Obituary of Hans R. Nybro

In loving memory of Hans Raymond Nybro, 84, who passed away peacefully on February 29, 2024. He was the proud son of Hans and Jenny who were born and raised in Norway. Hans, known as Ray to family and friends, was a lifelong resident of Staten Island and a graduate of Port Richmond High School. After two years with the NYPD, Ray joined the FDNY and enjoyed a productive 35-year career. He worked mainly at L11 in the East Village and then L83 in Westerleigh where he retired as a Lieutenant. Ray loved the camaraderie of the fire department and never missed marching in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Manhattan and the Norwegian Day parade in Bay Ridge. Loving his Norwegian heritage, he was a member of FDNY Vikings where he served as treasurer and chaired the annual golf and sailboat race outings. He was also an active member of the FDNY Staten Island Retirees. Ray was an original member of the Los Bomberos fireman’s camp, enjoying many summers with family and friends in the Hudson Valley. After retirement he spent time traveling to many destinations with his wife Rose and fellow FDNY retiree couples. He also loved spending family beach time on Long Beach Island, NJ and Sanibel, FL. What gave Hans his greatest pleasure was enjoying time with his grandchildren. He and Rose enthusiastically attended their dance recitals, school and sporting events. He was also an avid fan of the Yankees and Giants. Hans is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Rose, his son Raymond (Patrice) and daughter Sharon (Michael) and daughter-in-law Sara. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and his sister Alice Giantasio. He is predeceased by his son Gary and sister Sonja DeGroat. Visitation will be held on Wednesday March 6 from 3:30-8 pm at Matthew Funeral Home, 2508 Victory Blvd, Staten Island. Funeral Service at Zion Lutheran Church at 11:00 am, 505 Watchogue Road. Entombment at Resurrection Cemetery following service. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in memory of Hans to Tunnels to Towers Foundation, 2361 Hylan Boulevard, SI, NY 10306.
