I don’t know how they met back in the 50s or 60s, but I’m glad John and my father (Mel Scalici), both Staten Island jewelers and WW2 veterans, met and did business together and then shared social circles. Those were the days when an independent business could thrive due to excellent service and real customer care…John and Mel worked to feed each other business. Such a rarity today. I feel like a bit of my father was lost at today’s funeral, that’s an indication and remembrance of the times when both families were friends. So I’m so so sorry for John’s families’ hearts, particularly Terri, Rita, and John . You just never forget good people in your life that played a role in there somewhere. Finally, I only knew a little of Serviceman Tulli’s Normandy work but as I began to read of D-Day more and more, I just can’t imagine the fear and courage these young men went through, let alone be wounded and survive that, only to return to America with no clear-cut future for the rest of your life. But made it he did, and as I looked around at today’s mass and saw his big family, what a wonderful homage to John’s influence to those who knew him, be it through family or friends.
